Letters to the Editor
April 2009 Letters:
Mr. Jay Hubbell writes in your paper in the second paragraph
about the "white European Zionist Jewish colony in Palestine." Not only does he
sound like a bigoted racist, he compounds his problems by being uninformed about
the subject matter. The "new" left in America has mostly adhered to sympathies
with Arabs. So sorry Mr. Hubbell, being an Arab is no insult to anyone, no
matter how you wish to cut it. He is
apparently not aware of the vast amounts of money funneled to Fatah, year after
year.
Actually, some of the items in your paper are of such innocence that it is almost laughable if it were not such a serious matter. Do you know anything about the Balfour Declaration, do you know anything about the whole region being carved up into different countries after World War II, the English Mandate over the region? And more than anything, apparently you are not aware of the heady days of Arab cries: "if Israel were to be voted a country, let all Arabs within that territory leave and we have them surrounded, we’ll push them into the ocean and you can then go back home and take all the spoils that come with it." Two things happened: 1) in a new country with bridges and roads destroyed by the British when they left, Israel won the war—against all odds; 2) on all sides of Israel there were now homeless Arabs who had followed the war cries and promises and were now outside Israel’s boundaries. And the countries that declared and lost the war? These same people who they exhorted to leave home and hearth were kept right there at the border and were not permitted to enter any of the Arab countries. Thus was created a "Palestinian football."
Mr. Hubbell, it might be worthwhile considering that indiscriminate shelling of civilian places is against "the rules of warfare"—as if there could be an excuse for wars—but that is my personal opinion. As much as I abhor any killing, I’d like to point out that the allover news, including you, only talk about damage Israelis do to Gaza. Do you know how far back northern Gaza is indiscriminately hurling rocks into civilian villages, including hospitals and schools. I am positive you will have many "yes, but’s......"—targeting civilians—well before Israel went into Gaza—has been going on and on without any mention anywhere.
Please note, I disagree with much that goes on in the Middle East. But I do not live there, I do not make the decisions, nor do I live under the threat of shelling on either side. So both you and I are speaking as outsiders, no matter how affiliated you may be feeling one way or the other. The least we can do as such "outsiders" is try to get both sides of the story, as much as possible, and stop trying to inflame outside opinion one way or the other.
The situation has been and is still dire. Do not make it any worse. I hope you can understand this reasoning.
